Lavender Flow, Nadene's 40th Birthday Quilt

I have always loved to make presents for friends and family. So it is my sister in law Nadene's 40th birthday so of course I thought I would make her a quilt..... I didnt want a traditional quilt for Nadene. I had the book Layered Waves, by Karen Eckmeier and have wanted  to make a quilt from it, for a very long time... it was in my to do list.... as we all have them....

This was my inspiration for the quilt I made.

So I found out Nadene's favourite colour was lavender.... so the quilt was started... I bought 9 half yards of various purple batik fabrics... and started cutting using karen's layering and topstitchng techniques.

And once I got the hang of how to cut, fold and sew, I made 11 different waves... I then placed them on my white background.to work out the best way.... I made a few extra small waves to fill in the big white spaces.....

I then decided to make a curved border..... easier then you think, with Karen's methods... and Tadah.... Nadene;s quilt is ready ready for quilting.... Cosidering this is not the type of quilt I would usually make.... I ma pretty happy.... I hope Nadene likes it..... that is the main thing.... he he

My Hooterville Wall Hanging

I attended a Wendy Williams Workshop at my local quilt store My Patch Fabrics and she taught us some of the techniques for her quilt design called Hooterville, which is a wool felt applique. The one to the right is Wendy's...... Love It!!!!!!

After the workshop... yes I was a bit slack and hadn't completed any more of the quilt.... But woohoo got my act together in the last couple of weeks and made the leaves and flower heads. So last night I started to  embroider the pieces onto the background.... I did change my background colour to Dark Blue and Sky Blue.......... and I was a little bit excited with how it was looking.... so the progress so far.....

Kaffe Fassett Fabrics - I Love them!!

What is it about Kaffe Fassett that I love...... it must be the colours and how they are used without the normal colour guidelines..... You know blue and green must never be seen without a colour in between!! The Kaffe Fassett web site is fantastic .....

I have made (or nearly made) quite a few things using his fabrics.

I have been making a quilt for Miss J and really all I have to do is put a border on it and then quilt it.... That is on my to do list..... This was from a workshop I went to that Sheena Chapman taught at.....Sheena teaches in a very freestyle way.... so there is no right or wrong.... She has a great eye for colour....

I have even made Bunting to match..... This is one of my own patterns.... I  made it to match Miss J's almost finished quilt.... She is waiting very patiently for it...

I also used his fabrics in the yellow range to make the background for a needle turned applique wall hanging a made from a Sarah Fielke workshop from her book "Quilting from little things"..... I have never been a great hand sewer but the workshop was invaluable.... and since then I started making a Hawaiian block also using needle turn applique..... I hope i am like most quilters/crafters with lots of UFO's... he he
Finally....... I used his range to make this lampshade..... also from a workshop I attended at MyPatch Fabrics, in Milton NSW... I do love this..... These colours are possibly my all time favourite... at the moment anyway.....
I hope you have also noticed;
1) my new Iphone app camera +... thought I would play around with the frames for my pics and
2) I enjoy attending workshops run by other people...... I am, and hope you are always willing to learn something new......

anywho.... cheers Janeene

Wedding Quilt

Hi, I have been in Queensland for the past week with friends and of course family. It was the first time I had been on a multiple family holiday ie. "Griswalds". We had a great time and did ALL the Theme Parks. I did not get any sewing in so, being my first day at home I HAD to do some sewing. Anyhoo....
>>
Mr D and I got married last year and for memory of that wonderful day I wanted a Wedding Quilt. I designed an applique tree and fused it onto the background. I made a template and cut out about 60 leaves and made a flower template and cut out about 60 petals. Fabric used for this is a range of Batiks.

During the reception I had the leaves and petals out and asked ALL the guests to sign them... Thanks to my wonderful friend Robyn, who made sure this got done....

Anyhow; since being away... I wanted to get started on completing my wedding quilt. I had previously designed the birds (which represent my wonderful husband Mr D and myself). I had even chosen the fabrics, so this afternoon I finally traced and fused the birds onto the tree. I do love it!!!!

Next step will be designing a bird for daughter Miss J and fuse the leaves and flowers onto the branches. I will then raw edge applique the flowers and leaves onto the quilt. But that is for tomorrow.....

P.S. did you notice my pics.... my friend Miss L showed me the app called frametastic for my Iphone.... I love it... he he

Lamp recovering workshop.

Okay.... I have a confession..... Well... As you would know by reading my blog title I LOVE sewing.... but I must confess.... that I am actually a lover of craft as well.... he he... oh and beautiful fabric.......

Anywho... I had a great day today, went to a lamp recovering workshop at my friend Vals, Patchwork shop in Milton (you know My Patch).... Val can recover and make lampshades, now that is a crafty skill. So I went along to today hoping to learn a new crafty skill...

It was so fantastic that I forgot to take a before picture.... But I did take an after..... I hope you like it, I used a Phillip Jacobs fabric in some of my favourite colours... I must say it looks alot better than the daggy old black one... he he

Thats me on the right and Judy and Bronwyn with their lamp recovering sensations!!

My new lampshade... I love the colours!!
